Customer Reivews

Not nearly as eloquent as some reviews here on the subtleties of the espresso, with my Isomac Venus it pulls a lovely, dark shot with a nice crema. A real treat. The beans, grinds smell absolutely delightful and espresso is delectable. I'd consider this on par with the quality of Illy espresso, a leg up from Coffee Bean Direct Six Bean Espresso, and in a whole different league than Starbucks, Kicking Horse Cliffhanger, Community Coffee Extra Dark. Very nice... highly recommended!

I was excited to buy a larger bag of organic Lavazza beans at a good price. While not a coffee / espresso snob, I do like coffee and have lived and imbibed in enough coffee-centric countries to have some points of comparison. This is a good coffee, but not a flavorful or very distinctive coffee. I bought it to use in a stove top espresso maker - not a pulled shot - where it did well as the base for a nice cappuccino or latte...but not exceptional. As an Americano or in a Bodum, it didn't work for me. Just strong, a little bitter...someone here mentions a lemon overtone and while I don't normally go for the descriptive terms, I think the lemon overtone is a problem for me too. It's a strong coffee, a little bitter, not smooth, lemon acidic overtone, verging on dark roast, not too oily...serviceable, but not in anyway distinctive in its flavors. So I am moving on.

Customer Reviews

Wonderful cup of coffee! I just recently purchased a Preciso grinder and used the Lavazza crema beans; loved it! No sugar was needed! I dont understand the negative comments. This coffee is not bitter! Perhaps a good grinder would help. I have tried a lot of coffee beans, and these by far for the price are great!

Before this I've never taken home a coffee that wasn't maxwell house ground coffee or some off brand instant coffee at my local a&p. Also Kurig. This is so different and so much better that my first cup left me smiling. This purchase was preceded by my receipt of an Aeropress coffee maker. That plus this coffee is a great combo.

Customer Review
If you are fan of the Illy IperEspresso medium roast, then you'll probably enjoy the Lungo. I'm a huge fan of the dark roast capsule (see my other reviews), but the Lungo didn't suit my taste buds. I found it comparable to a strong cup of Colombian roast arabica. And, I prefer my espresso to taste, well, like espresso.

I tried the Lungo because I wanted a longer pour. I get every last drop out of the dark roast capsules, probably waiting too long to stop the brewing cycle. The two ounces of espresso-magic-in-my-mouth always ends too soon, and I'm left wanting more. I thought a larger cup of espresso would be the answer, but this didn't do it for me. If I want coffee, I'll use my coffee press.

I still gave this product 4 stars because, although it isn't for me, the Lungo still produces an exceptional cup of espresso. I just wish they used dark roast instead of medium.

As a side note - the size/design of this capsule looks the same as the other roasts, yet it seems to allow steam to travel through the pod faster. When I brew my dark roast, it usually takes about 30 - 40 seconds to get two ounces of espresso. The first time I used the Lungo I turned my back for 20 seconds and my illy cappuccino cup (5 ounces) was overflowing. So, yeah - pay attention!

Gourment illy coffe beans taste and painted

A balance of tones, the subtle and nuanced dialog........

Son of illycaffè founder Francesco Illy: Ernesto Illy said “When we drink illy coffee, our tongue gets painted. As long as it stays painted, it remains tasty!!!”
Producing the world’s finest tasting coffee requires an exacting balance of subtle, aromatic nuances: a blending of acidic, sweet and bitter notes, in order to create the distinctive of illy taste. illy's rich body envelopes the palate, creating a pleasant tactile sensation as it paints the tongue. Numerous flavors ranging from fruity to flowery with traces of chocolate, caramel, hints of almonds and honey, all blend sweetly together. Even those who prefer sugarless coffee are sure to be more than gratified by the end result.

illy's approach to sustainablity and not just gain the profit

In 1998, illycaffè joined forces with Share Our Strength (SOS), a non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating childhood hunger throughout the world. In ten years, illycaffè has donated more than $1.5 million to SOS to end childhood hunger. To help develop Ethiopia’s coffee, growing community, the birthplace of coffee, and a source of illycaffè’s premier beans – illycaffè partnered with Share Our Strength to launch Cup of Kindness. Founded in 2004, the program has funded construction and ongoing operation of the illy Community School in Moyale Woreda, a drought-stricken community in the Somali region of Ethiopia. illycaffè remains committed to the cause and the program, raising funds earmarked to help build yet more schools in Ethiopia.
